Former Egypt interior minister and top security brass face death sentences for killing protesters

Former interior minister Habib El-Adly and senior security personnel from across Egypt to face trial for crimes against protesters and the country following the uprising on 25 January
The General Prosecution has referred Egypt's former interior minister Habib El-Adly and several senior security officials to the criminal court for the intentional killing of protesters during the January 25 Revolution. If found guilty of this charge, the minimum sentence available to the court is 15 years in prison, while the maximum is death.
The official spokesperson for the prosecutor's office said that among those indicted in are General Hussein Abdel Rahman, former assistant to the head of the state security apparel; General Adly Fayed, former assistant to the minister of defence for general security; General Ahmed Ramzy, assistant to the former minister for central security and Ismael El Shaer, assistant to the former minister for Cairo security.
The group are accused of intentionally killing protesters, damaging public and private property which harmed the nation's economy, creating a security vacuum, spreading chaos and terrorizing citizens.
The prosecution also transferred General Osama Youssef El-Marasy, former head of Giza security, General Omar Abdel Aziz El-Faramawy, head of 6th of October security to the criminal court for spreading chaos during the revolution, disrupting general security, and threatening the safety of protesters.
The prosecutor-general, Abdel Meguid Mahmoud, has also referred Mohamed Ibrahim, the former head of Alexandria security; General Adel El Lakany, the head of the central security sector in Alexandria; Magdy Abu Kamar, former head of security in the Beheira governorate and Mahmoud Abdallah Barakat, training deputy in the general administration for state security and seven members of the secret police and an officer in the civil protection administration to the criminal courts in Alexandria and Beheira.
The official spokesperson for the prosecution also added that several officers and policemen have been referred to the criminal courts in Alexandria, Suez, 6 October, Giza, Beheira, Gharbiya, Qalioubiya, Daqahliya, Sharqiya, Damietta and Beni Suef governorates for killing and injuring protesters.
The spokesperson added that the prosecution is keen to preserve the rights of the victims of the January 25 Revolution and has interviewed hundreds of eyewitnesses, injured protesters and families of martyrs in order to create a comprehensive picture of the events that occurred.
