Zamalek to face Tanta as Egypt Cup comes back to life Egypt Cup to return on Tuesday as Zamalek face second-division side Tanta in round 16 of the competition
Zamalek will face second-division side Tanta on Tuesday in round 16 of the Egypt Cup, despite doubts concerning the competition's fate. The future of Egypt's second largest competition was in question due to the country's continuing political instability, which prompted the Egyptian Football Association to cancel the domestic league. Last season, the Egypt Cup was cancelled after the Port Said disaster that left over 70 spectators dead and hundreds injured during a match between Ahly and Masry at the Port Said Stadium. The Tuesday game, to be held in Gouna behind closed doors, will be easy for Zamalek, who strengthened their squad with six players during the summer transfer window. Zamalek's coach Helmi Toulan has named three of the club's new signings for his 19-man squad on Tuesday. Defender Yasser Ibrahim, forward Moemen Zakaria and striker Ahmed Ali have all been named in the list, which omitted midfielders Ahmed Hassan and Nour El-Sayed due to injuries. Zamalek's full-back Ahmed Samir will miss also the game due to automatic suspension. In May this year, the White Knights opened their Egypt Cup campaign with an easy 3-0 victory over second-division team Tersana. Zamalek are looking for their first title since 2008, when they last won the Egypt Cup. The White Knights are aiming to benefit from the withdrawal of arch-rivalsAhly from the competition following a dispute with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) over sponsorship issues. The winner of Tuesday's clash will face El-Entag El-Harby in the competition's quarter on Sunday.
