Arab League accuses Syria of chemical attack Arab League calls on UN Security Council to agree on 'deterrent' measures regarding chemical attack; Israel's Peres requests UN to appoint Arab League to set up temporary government in Syria
The Arab League has blamed the Syrian government for last week's alleged chemical weapons attack near Damascus that killed hundreds, calling for the perpetrators to be brought to justice. In an emergency meeting held Tuesday, the Arab League also called on members of the UN Security Council to overcome their differences and agree on "deterrent" measures against those who committed "this heinous crime." The League said it will convene a meeting at the ministerial level next week to follow up on the situation in Syria. The Syrian government has denied it was behind the attack. The US said it is ready for military action if evidence is conclusive that the Syrian regime used chemical weapons. Meanwhile, Israel's president is calling on the United Nations to appoint the Arab League to set up a temporary government in Syria to stop the bloodshed. Shimon Peres' comments mark the highest-profile Israeli call for international intervention in neighboring Syria. Israel has been careful to stay on the sidelines of Syria's civil war, which has killed more than 100,000. But international demands have been growing for action amid allegations that the regime launched a chemical weapons attack against rebels last week. Peres said the international community must first remove all chemical weapons from Syria so they cannot be used again. Peres said "foreigners will not understand what is going on in Syria" so the UN should task the Arab League with setting up a government. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/80073.aspx
