Art Alert: El-Fan Midan back to celebrate last Saturday of Ramadan
El-Fan Midan celebrates Ramadan next Saturday 3 August with a number of cultural events that are expected to excite Cairenes, as usual
Published in Ahram Online on 01 - 08 - 2013

After a long pause and a number of cancellations due to the country's turbulent political situation, Egypt's Independent Culture Coalition has announced the resumption of its El-Fan Midan (Arts Square) project this Saturday, 3 August with a cultural day that includes street performances and shows to capture Cairo during the holy month.
Last month's El-Fan Midan planned to join anti-Morsi protests filling the streets in front of the Ittihadiya palace with music concerts and arts events but was cancelled at the last minute.
El-Fan Midan was launched in April 2011, almost two months after the January 25 Revolution, by a group artists and cultural figures seeking to find tools and platforms for dialogue through art and to disseminate culture to all Egyptians.
It developed into a street festival held on the first Saturday of every month, bringing music, poetry, performing arts and more to Egypt's squares and streets.
The festival depends on personal contributions and donations by people who believe artists have the right to share their artwork with the public and people have the right to learn about culture and creativity as a fundamental part of life, rather than a mere luxury.
On its Facebook page, the Independent Culture Coalition announced the return of El-Fan Midan next Saturday at its signature location Abdeen Square.
The programme will include a variety of performances such as Sheikh Zain Mahmoud (Egyptian Sufi singer), Eskenderella band, El-Gaafra band. The exact programme will be announced soon.
El-Fan Midan, from 7:30pm Saturday, 3 August to 3am on Sunday, 4 August, in Abdeen Square in front of Abdeen Palace, in Cairo's downtown district.
