Art Alert: Tunisian artist Ghalia Ben Ali to perform in Cairo's Hayy Festival El-Geneina Theatre at Al-Azhar Park to host musician Ghalia Ben Ali in place of Iraqi singer Baidar Al-Basri on Thursday
Tunisian musician and actress Ghalia Ben Ali will be performing in place of the originally scheduled Iraqi singer Baidar Al-Basri on Thursday as part of the annual Hayy Festival. The festival, scheduled to last until Friday, 2 August, brings local and regional musicians and performers to the open-air El-Genaina Theatre at Al-Azhar Park during the fasting month of Ramadan. The 2013 Hayy Festival has hosted diverse female talents from the Arab world, showcasing prominent female musicians fromMauritaniaand Tunisia. Emerging from Tunisia, Ben Ali not only is a singer but also a successful actress, as she played a leading role in the film "La saison des homes." She is also a crafted graphical designer, composer and songwriter. Ghalia Ben Ali is known for fusing elements of Arabic classical music with jazz and Indian tunes. Her voice varies from Arabic folk and jazz traditions to contemporary chillout, mixing different genres and cultural traditions. She is known for singing in classical Arabic, dancing and utilising design visuals during herperformance. She is widely praised by Arabic-speaking listeners for covering Om Kalthoum songs. Her latest projects include "Romeo & Leila: a ReOriental Fairytale," and "Ghalia sings Om Kalthoum." Her albums include Wild Harissa (2001) Romeo & Leila (2006) Al Palna (2008). Following Ben Ali's concert, Khansa Batma from Morocco will also be performing at El-Geneina Theatre, on Friday as the festival's final act. A concert by Palestinian singer Sanaa Moussa has been postponed since last week due to mass protests held on Friday 26 July, but it has yet to be determined when it will take place.
