Egypt League indefinitely postponed due to security fears Seventeenth round of Egyptian Premier League is suspended indefinitely following renewed security concerns, EFA announces Wednesday
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) announced on Wednesday that the 17th round of the Egyptian Premier League would be delayed for anindefinite period due to security concerns. ''We are surprised by the move; we have no choice but to postpone the round," Mazen Marzouq, head of EFA's competitions committee, said in televised statements on Wednesday. Marzouq admitted that the decision had been taken after the Ultras – hardcore fans of Cairo's Ahly and Zamalek football clubs – threatened to attend matches scheduled for this week despite an official crowd ban. On Tuesday, the Ultras White Knights, ardent Zamalek supporters, warned Egyptian authorities that they would "retaliate" if the crowd ban was not lifted within 48 hours. Fans are currently banned from attending Egyptian football matches due to lingering security concerns. A crowd ban was partially lifted last year, but recent disturbances prompted the EFA to reverse the decision. Zamalek had been scheduled to face Ismaily on Thursday, while Ahly was meant to host Gouna on Saturday.Neither game will be played, however, in light of the reactivated crowd ban.
