The Egyptian Popular Current, headed by leading opposition figure Hamdeen Sabbahi, has denied forming a presidential council to run the country during a transitional period if early presidential elections are held - a key opposition demand. The move was merely proposed at a board meeting of the Current, the group's spokesperson Hossam Moanes said. The denial comes after some critics accused some leaders of the opposition to President Mohamed Morsi of attempting to captalise on the grassroot efforts by 'Rebel' activists to unseat the president. The anti-Morsi Rebel campaign has been organising for early presidential polls amid mounting discontent over what they perceive as the Islamist government's failure to meet democratic standards. The Current – a member of the opposition National Salvation Front (NSF) – is to take part in a series of events dubbed 'Rebel Week' in seven governorates next week, Moanes added. 'Rebel Week' is geared towards mustering support for the Rebel campaign's petition and the 30 June anti-government demos. Moanes also welcomed calls for a national conference attended by political figures and revolutionary forces to look into the logistics of holding early presidential polls. A slew of political parties and senior politicians have backed the Rebel campaign, including the NSF, with some offering their offices to the signature-collecting process. Sabbahi, who finished third in last year's presidential elections, signed the 'Rebel' petition two days ago.
