Assem Shalaby elected to head Arab Publishers Association
Although Assem Shalaby came in 2nd, as the most popular Egyptian candidate he became the head of the Arab Publisher's Association

Assem Shalaby was elected on Sunday night to head the Arab Publishers Association (APA). The Association's general assembly held its usual meeting in the main hall of Cairo International Book Fair to choose 13 new board members and a new head.
The new 13 members were elected by 8:00pm. They then held a closed meeting to choose the association's bureau.
Technically, Assem Shalaby came second in the vote count, but he was chosen as the new head of the association following a non-official tradition that an Egyptian head the association because they are headquartered in Egypt.
The total votes were 202, with 199 voting and valid votes at 191.
The 13 new board members are: Mohammed Ali Baydoun 131 votes, Assem Shalaby 125 votes, Mohammed Sebai' 122 votes, Nabil Abu Halsam 119 votes, Ibrahim Yazigy 117 votes, Saud AlMansour 114 votes, Ahmed Sayegh 108 votes, Hassan Khafagy 106 votes, Reda Rahmouni 91 votes, Maher Kayaly 87 votes, Mohammed Saleh 84 votes Ibrahim Ansi, 79 votes and Nasser Assi 72 votes.
The new bureau members are: Egyptian Assem Shalaby as Association head; Syrian publisher Mohammed Seba'I and Saudi publisher Ahmed Hamdan as deputies; Lebanese Ali Baydoun as general secretary.
Arab publishing Associations each have a representative on the board of the Arab Publishers Association, which was formed in 1955. It is considered an independent regional organisation and has the aim to represent Arab publishers in international forums, defend their rights and put regulatory rules of the Industry in the Arab World. The Association has two main offices: the general secretary located in Beirut, Lebanon and is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt.
Assem Shalaby heads the Egyptian Publishers Association and owns Al Wafaa publishing house. Although he's been in the industry for 33 years, he was unknown in the media until May when he became the head of the Egyptian Publishers Association.
