Art Alert: Nutcracker ballet opens in Cairo 20 December Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without 'The Nutcracker,' a ballet set on Christmas Eve; The Cairo Opera Ballet Company performs the classic on only four nights in December
On December 20, 21 and 23, 24, the Cairo Opera Ballet Company and the Cairo Opera Orchestra, conducted by Nayer Nagui, will perform The Nutcracker ballet at the Cairo Opera House Main Hall. The ballet is based on the story The Nutcracker and the King of Mice by E.T.A. Hoffman. The story begins on Christmas Eve and is obviously why the ballet is usually performed around Christmas. Although the story diverts a little from Hoffman's text (as Pepita, choreographer, used Dumas' revised version of The Nutcracker), the fairytale revolves around a girl dreaming of a Nutcracker Prince who battles a Mouse King with seven heads. The Nutcracker is a classic and lovely family outing at Christmas. Programme: 20, 21, 23, 24 December at 8pm Cairo Opera House main hall Zamalek, Cairo
