Giza Quorsaya Island residents clash with military police over land rights Clashes erupt between army forces and residents of Quorsaya Island in Greater Cairo due to long-standing land feud
A land feud between the government and residents of Quorsaya, an Island across from the Cairo distict of Maadi, led its residents to block a main road in Giza, on the other side of the Island. Reports said a crackdown by the Egyptian army on Sunday morning to wrest part of the 500 feddan land from the residents led to clashes, subsequently prompting some residents to block traffic in Al-Bahr Al-Aazam Road in Giza. Al-Ahram's Arabic news website said that five army soldiers were injured in the clashes while troops fired in the air to disperse the crowd. The Quorsaya land feud dates back to 2007 when Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif's government, under the rule of ousted president Hosni Mubarak, attempted to force residents off the island. The residents successfully fought off the eviction.
