Zamalek boss wants Ahly to withdraw from Egyptian league Zamalek's president suggests that Ahly withdraw, as it is Ahly Ultras supporters who are refusing to allow the league to resume before the Port Said case is dealt with
The president of Zamalek football club has demanded that the club's archrival Ahly withdraw from the Egyptian league, to allow the league to resume. The Egyptian Football Association decided on Monday to postpone the season indefinitely because they had not yet received security guarantees from the Ministry of Interior. The new season was initially scheduled to start on 17 September. Protests by the Ultras [hardcore Ahly fans] who argue that the league should not be resumed until justice is done in relation to the deaths of over 70 people at an Ahly/Masry game on 1 February in Port Said caused the EFA to delay it for a month, before deciding on Monday to postpone the season indefinitely. Many domestic clubs were relying on the resumption of the league to resolve the financial difficulties caused by last season's cancellation. "If they delayed the Egyptian league due to the pressure on Ahly and the government, let Ahly withdraw from the league," Zamalek's president told reporters on Monday at the club. "If the sports ministry fail to organise the domestic league, they must compensate us with 12 million Egyptian pounds, to pay the salary bills of the club,'' he concluded.
