Yosra El-Hawary's 'El Soor' wins music award
The music video 'El-Soor' that took YouTube by storm in April wins the Fair Play International Music Award, with an invitation extended to its singer, Yosra El-Hawary, to perform in Brazil

This year Egyptian singer and accordion player Yosra El-Hawary has won first prize in the anti-corruption themed Fair Play Global Music Video Competition. El-Hawary won the Fair Play International Music Awardfor her song "El-Soor" (The Wall).
The third edition of the competition saw 75 videos submitted from 35 countries by young people aged 18-35. The competition honours musicians from all over the world for music videos that stand against corruption and connect socially conscious artists and citizens worldwide.
El-Hawary along with other winners will perform in Brazil this November, joining more than 1500 anti-corruption youth activists in Brasilia in the "Third Voices Against Corruption Forum" followed by the "15th International Anti-Corruption Conference."
The video of the song "El-Soor"shows El-Hawary on her accordion with Cairo's infamous downtown security walls in the background as she sings lyrics by poet Walid Taher about a poor man who stands against a wall and urinates on it and the people who built it.
The poem was written in 2005, before the 2011 revolution and before any security walls were built, and talks of metaphorical walls in society. It was the video that connected the lyrics with the events of post-revolutionary Egypt.
El-Hawary is new to performing, only taking to small stages in Cairo and Alexandria this year. Besides her solo career, El-Hawary is one of the founders of the Choir Project and an active member of El-Tammy Theatre Group.
