Egypt's Illicit Gains Authority referred the case of Safwat El-Sherif, former secretary-general of ousted president Hosni Mubarak's now-defunctNational Democratic Party (NDP), to a Cairo criminal court on Wednesday.
El-Sherif stands accused of illegally obtaining some LE300 million (roughly $49.2 million) during his long Mubarak-era political career. El-Sherif's two sons, Ashraf and Ihab, both face similar charges.
In the wake of last year's Tahrir Square uprising, El-Sherif was arrested on corruption charges along with a number of other Egyptian politicians affiliated with the former regime.
Subsequent investigations revealed that El-Sherif had obtained his considerable wealth by abusing his political status while serving as information minister, speaker of the Shura Council (the upper, consultative house of parliament) and head of Egypt's Radio and Television Union under Mubarak.
Investigations further found that most of El-Sherif's financial assets – including luxury real estate and agricultural land – had been purchased from the state by the NDP stalwart at fire-sale prices.
El-Sherif's wife, Iqbal Halabi, along with both of his daughters, has also been summoned by Egypt's Illicit Gains Authority, which is demanding the restoration of any ill-gotten assets they may have received from El-Sherif in the past.
