Soldier killed in Abbasiya clashes, injury toll rises to 373: Egyptian Ambulance Organization One death of Friday's Abbasiya clashes has been confirmed; special forces soldier Samir Anwar Samir was gunned down during the turmoil
Soldier Samir Anwar Samir became the first fatality of Friday's Abbasiya clashes after succumbing to a gunshot wound to the stomach, said Ahmed El-Ansary, head of the Egyptian Ambulance Organization who also confirmed the injury toll has risen to 373. The special forces soldier was pronounced dead at the Zahara Hospital, according to El-Ansary. Some 208 of the injured, on the other hand, were rushed to different hospitals as the other 165 were treated instantly by paramedics in the street, said El-Ansary. Egypt's military police began at 3:30pm (CMT) firing water cannons at protesters, who were also throwing stones at military personnel shortly after thousands-strong marches reached the army headquarters, in protest of the ruling military council. It remains unclear which side initiated the fight. The ruling military council said groups attacked the army outside of the headquarters of the Ministry of Defence earlier that afternoon.
