Popular Egyptian singer Saad El-Sagheer has announced his intention to run in Egypt's 2012 presidential elections.
El-Sagheer is widely known amongst the Egyptian public for his lavish and loud music videos and blockbusters, frequently starring popular belly dancer Dina.
His most famous songs are "Grapes" and "I Love You Donkey." The latest film he starred in was Al-Haram Street, produced in 2011.
El-Sagheer has faced a lot of criticism in the past for the sexual innuendos he uses in his performances.
In December 2010, El-Sagheer and a belly dancer known as Abeer were arrested and faced a lawsuit filed for indecent activities, after performing at a wedding. However, El-Sagheer was released after paying a fine.
Supported by an entourage and a band playing Egyptian folkloric flutes and drums, El-Sagheer went to the Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission in the suburb of Heliopolis, Cairo to collect the documents needed for official registration.
El-Sagheer claimed that he would gain 55,000 signatures from a large number of governorates, but it will a challenge for him to do so given that he only announced his candidacy on Tuesday, six days before the deadline on 8 April.
The Commission's rules for potential candidates require them to secure the support of 30 elected MPs, collect the signatures of 30,000 Egyptian citizens from at least 15 Egyptian governorates, or secure the backing of a political party that holds at least one seat in parliament.
Presidential elections will take place 23-24 May, with the president named 21 June after a run-off vote 16-17 June, if necessary.##
