Egypt participates in 8th Aljazeera International Film Festival in April
The 8th round of Aljazeera International Film Festival will take place in Doha, 19-22 April
Published in Ahram Online on 31 - 03 - 2012

This year the Aljazeera International Film Festival will include 140 films selected from Arab and international filmmakers.
1/2 a Revolution, a Dutch/Egyptian production by Omar Sharkawi and Karim El-Hakim, will be screened with 27 other films in the long film category. Concentrating on Cairo's downtown district and the first days of the January 25 Revolution, the film depicts a group of activists who participate in protests in their neighborhood near Tahrir Square.
The same selection includes Francesco Cavaliere's (R)esistenza, an Italian film tackling stories of civil resistance in Scampia against the backdrop of organised crime, high unemployment and social decay.
Also in the selection, Another Life, a film by Alexandre Dereims from France, looks at a nameless man and woman who discover the thin line between love and hatred within the walls of a desolate cabin.
Medium length films include A House of Bernarda Alba directed by Lidia Peralta Garcia, a Spanish journalist and filmmaker,After 35 Years by Alka Sadat from Afghanistan, and Alqastal Battle by Israa Salhab, a Jerusalemite journalist whose name came to light in November and December 2011 when she was arrested and detained by the Israeli police. Some 60 other films by Arab and international filmmakers are in this category.
The short films category includes 48 productions.
The 8th Aljazeera International Film Festival will also present several films under the categories "New Horizon" and "Promising Films."
According to the festival's website: "The Aljazeera Festival was formally inaugurated on 18 April 2005 by the chairman of the Board of Directors of Aljazeera Network, Sheikh Hamad Bin Thamir Al-Thani. In its first year, the work of 14 Arab countries was included under the theme “Social Programmes and News”. Gold, silver and bronze awards were presented to winners from each category. To encourage student filmmakers, a new category called “New Horizon” was launched which has now become a festival trademark. This trend-setting category has proved to be highly successful and has now become a unique creative platform."
