At least six people, including Indian and Chinese tourists, were killed and 24 injured in a deadly accident Saturday on Egypt's Sokhna-Zaafrana road, an informed medical source said.
The fatal accident took place after two tour buses collided with a truck and a car on the Red Sea road.
The source said those dead and injured were of foreign nationalities, including Chinese and Indian tourists, on board the tour group buses en route to tourist hub Ain Sokhna.
The injured were transferred to the Health Insurance Hospital in Suez.
Deadly road accidents take place on a daily basis in Egypt due to poor road safety, badly maintained infrastructure, and loosely enforced traffic regulations.
However, Egypt has allocated millions of pounds to developing and expanding road networks in recent years. A comprehensive traffic law to crack down on violators and enhance safety is set to go into effect in 2020.
From 2015 to 2018, deaths from road accidents in Egypt decreased by 44.2%, according to a 2019 report by the Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAPMAS).
However, according to a recent report by CAPMAS, the number of road accidents reached 5,220 in the first half of 2019, up from 4,426 in the same period in 2018, an increase of 17.9 percent. Road accidents in the first half of 2019 left 1,567 dead and 6,046 injured, and damaged 8,335 vehicles.
