Duarte to stay with Burkina Faso despite ACN elimination Despite second consecutive Africa failure, Burkina Faso coach Paulo Duarte says he will stay put
Burkina Faso coach Paulo Duarte has insisted that he will not leave his post despite his team's elimination from the African Cup of Nations. Sudan reached the quarterfinals of the continental tournament for the first time in 42 years after Monday's 2-1 win over already-eliminated Burkina Faso, who were also defeated by Angola and Ivory Coast. “I will not resign because I'm not incompetent. We did not lose because the team is not good. We lost due to individual errors. You can do nothing against that,” Duarte told the Confederation of African Football (CAF)'s official website on Tuesday. “My contract ends in March and I'm looking forward to continuing the good job I have done over the years. My first option is Burkina Faso, though other offers are filtering in. I will choose the best deal for my career,” the Portuguese coach added. The 42-year-old Duarte has been coaching the Burkinabes since 2008, guiding them to two successive Africa Cup of Nations pointless finals (2008 in Angola and this year's edition). Duarte believes that fatal defensive faults downed his team despite its solid performance in the tournament hosted by Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. “We finished the tournament by handing out gift goals to our opponents. I'm surprised like everyone, because much was expected of us. “We played well, but conceded six goals… I'm solely responsible, as I selected the players. They wanted to win that third game to erase the two earlier losses, but things got bad again,” the coach concluded. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter:@AO_Sports)
