The liberal Wafd Party's higher committee declared on Monday that the party would not align itself with the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) – which managed to secure almost half of the vote in Egypt's first post-Mubarak parliamentary polls – in the incoming national assembly.
The Wafd Party pulled out of the FJP-dominated Democratic Alliance electoral coalition only weeks before the recently concluded elections kicked off in late November.
The party's higher committee is expected to choose its parliamentary representative and its nominee for parliamentary speaker within days.
According to committee member Hossam El-Khouly, the party has “no problem” with coordinating its plans to nominate a Wafd candidate for the position of deputy parliamentary speaker with the FJP.
