Egyptian armed forces spokesman Tamer El-Refaie said on Monday that border guards foiled an attempt to smuggle 72 kilograms of heroin using a four wheeler across the southern border, a statement by the armed forces said. The spokesman said that border guards acted on intelligence that drug kingpins were prepping to smuggle a shipment to Egyptian lands from the south. “The border guards continue with extensive efforts to eliminate criminals, traffickers, and drug kingpins who aim to undermine national security,” the statement concluded. Egypt imposes tough penalties on drug trafficking, with penalties extending to the death penalty if the defendant is found guilty of smuggling narcotics into the country.
