Former Real Madrid defender Salgado says 'lucky' to coach Egypt's Mo Salah
Published in Ahram Online on 25 - 09 - 2018

Former Real Madrid full-back Michel Salgado, who was recently appointed as Egypt's assistant coach, said he was lucky to work with star forward Mohamed Salah, whom he believes will get even better this season.
Salah made history for his country after becoming the first ever Egyptian to break into the top three of FIFA's annual 'Best' awards, having enjoyed a dream debut campaign with English Premier League club Liverpool last season.
He finished third behind Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo and winner Luka Modric of Real Madrid in the race for the world's best player prize for 2017/2018 on Monday.
Speaking following the ceremony that was held in London, Salgado said: "It's very difficult to find players who can change games but Mo Salah is that kind of player."
"You can see the responsibility he has when he plays for Egypt, he has 100 million people behind him, and he's also playing for one the best club teams in the world," he added, according to the Press Association.
"Being top scorer and most valuable player in the Premier League is very difficult to achieve and he's a blessing for the Arab and Muslim world.
"I'm really lucky to train with a player like him in my first job as a coach and he's only 26, he's got more to show and prove."
Salah scored 44 goals in all competitions last season, including 32 in the Premier League - a record tally in a 38-game top-flight campaign.
Salgado was recently named an assistant to Egypt's Mexican coach Javier Aguirre and made his first appearance in the dugout in the Pharaohs' 6-0 thrashing of Niger in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers in Alexandria earlier this month, where Salah scored twice and provided two assists.
Commenting on Salah's third-place finish in the FIFA award, the 42-year-old said: "That's important for the whole of football, we need something different so it's not always Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi, and players from Europe and South America. It's good to have players from different backgrounds."
