Appeals Court rejects motion for the recusal of Mubarak trial judges
The Appeals Court has rejected a move by the lawyers of the families of the January martyrs to see trial judges dismissed in the ongoing case against Hosni Mubarak
Published in Ahram Online on 07 - 12 - 2011

The Appeals Court rejected Wednesday a motion filed by a group of lawyers representing the families of the January revolution's martyrs against Judge Ahmed Rafaat and the panel of judges that oversees the trial of former president Hosni Mubarak.
The court also fined the lawyers of the martyrs' families LE6,000.
A lawyers had filed a motion of recusal against Judge Rafaat and others because of what they considered bias from Rafaat against the lawyers of the martyrs' families.
The lawyers mentioned in their filing that Rafaat did not allow them to cross examine Field Marshal Tantawi when he testified in the case of Mubarak in September. The former president is accused of ordering the killing of peaceful protesters in January.
The lawyers also claimed that they were attacked physically by the bodyguards of Tantawi and that the judges' panel treats the defendants' lawyers better than those of the families of the martyrs.
Judge Rafaat and the judges' panel sent a memo to the Appeals Court defending the panel and denying the accusations of the lawyers.
Former president Mubarak is facing corruption charges as well and is being tried along his sons and a number of former Ministry of Interior officials, including former Interior Minister Habib El Adly, in connection with the killings in January.
The Mubarak trial will resume 28 December 2011.
