Tunisian duo Esperance and Etoile Sahel kicked off their African Champions League group-stage campaign with convincing wins on Friday. Esperance claimed a 3-1 comeback win at home to DR Congo's AS Vita Club in Group C. Cameroonian midfielder Yazid Atouba gave the hosts a surprise lead on 10 minutes following a brilliant individual effort. He skipped past a couple of challengers, jinked into the area and slotted home with aplomb to stun the home crowd. Ivorian Fosseni Coulibaly brought Esperance level 10 minutes later with a close-range header into an empty net after two quick-fire efforts were thwarted by the keeper and the bar and Taha Khenissi made it 2-1 after converting a 26th-minute penalty. Anice Badri made sure of the points three minutes from time with an angled volley. Esperance, who won the Champions League title twice in 1994 and 2011, top Group C with three points. Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa take on Ethiopia's Saint-George in the other group game on Saturday. In Group A, Etoile Sahel thrashed Mozambique's Ferroviario Beira 5-0 at home. A brace from Diogo Acosta and goals from Alkhali Bangoura, Hamza Lahmar and Hameur Bouazza gave the 2007 Champions League winners a comprehensive opening win.
