Egypt's newly created National Press Authority (NPA) appointed on Wednesday Hisham Lotfi as acting chairman of Al-Ahram Institution following the resignation of Ahmed El-Sayed El-Naggar from his position as chairman, the head of the NPA Karam Gabr announced. Lotfi, who has served as chairman of Al-Ahram Advertising Agency, will now become acting chairman until the NPA appoints a new chairman and board of directors, according to Gabr. El-Naggar, a prominent economist, resigned on Wednesday after serving as Al-Ahram chairman since January 2014. In December 2016, parliament passed a new law regulating the media by forming the NPA to oversee state-owned press bodies and President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi ratified the new legislation. The NPA replaces the High Council of Press which oversaw state-owned press bodies since 1996.
