Art Alert: Hany Rashed's solo ‘The Last Farewell' displays at two Cairo galleries
Published in Ahram Online on 15 - 03 - 2017

Egyptian artist Hany Rashed will display his latest works in an exhibition titled The Last Farewell on Sunday 19 March at Mashrabia gallery and Soma Art School.
The exhibition is about the artist's salvation from grieving the loss of a younger sister many years ago.
“The ghost who chased me for 24 years. The ghost who inspired my art, and now I draw to run away from it; to exorcise my ghost. The ghost's name is Hadeer. She is 11 months old,” reads the text in the exhibition statement.
Born in Cairo in 1975, Rashed is a self-taught artist mentored by renowned artist Mohamed Abla.
Rashed regularly gives painting and collage classes at several venues including Soma.
He experiments with different techniques, but is known for a distinct style of painting and collage that draws from media imagery to critique excessive exposure to western media.
After the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, Rashed was immersed in documenting contemporary Egyptian history through his artwork and through a social media page titled ‘Contemporary Art' that gained popularity within the art scene.
The Last Farewell marks a new chapter for the artist, who returns with a highly personal subject after years of social artwork.
Programme:
The exhibition opens on Sunday 19 March, and runs till Thursday 20 April
Mashrabia, 8 Champollion St., Downtown, Cairo. Open daily except Friday, from 11am to 8pm
Soma Art School and Gallery, 14 Mohamed El-Maraashli St., Zamalek,Cairo. Open daily except Friday from 12-9pm
