European films dominate Berlinale's International Competition
Published in Ahram Online on 23 - 01 - 2017

Berlinale have released the final selection for the 2017 Competition on their website, and European films dominate the lineup.

The Berlinale Film Festival Competition is the main section of the festival. It features around 25 films every year, most of which are having their international premiere. The final selection is made by Festival Director Dieter Kosslick.

Launched in 1951, the Competition has hosted a number of iconic filmmakers over the years, such Jean Luc Godard, Martin Scorsese, Clint Eastwood, Oliver Stone, Agnès Varda and many more.

This year's selection consists of 24 films, 18 of which will be competing for the Golden and the Silver Bears and 22 of which will have their world premieres at the festival. 20 out the 24 films set to screen in the section are European productions or co-productions.

There is, however, much variety within the continent, with works from Germany, France, The United Kingdom, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria and other countries.

There are however, a relatively large number of entries from Asia, Latin America and the United States. Two regions remain practically absent from the lineup: Africa and the Middle-East, represented only in one French-Senegalese-Belgian-German-Lebanese co-production.
