Egyptian revolutionary bags European freedom prize Egypt's own Asmaa Mahfouz, along with other icons of Arab Spring, wins 2011 European Parliament Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought
Egyptian political activist Asmaa Mahfouz, along with other well-known symbols of the Arab Spring, has received this year's European Parliament Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. "Congratulations to Egypt and the Arab world and to all revolutionaries who demand freedom for their countries,” Mahfouz tweeted after hearing the news. “The real award is to achieve the changes we dream of." Mahfouz is currently in the US capital, where she and a handful of other Egyptian activists were invited to speak about the Egyptian revolution at a conference organised by the Egyptian-American community. Along with Mahfouz, other winners of this year's Sakharov prize include Mohamed Bouazizi (Tunisia), Ahmed Al-Zubair Ahmed Al-Sanusi (Libya), Razan Zaitouneh (Syria), and Ali Farzat (Syria).
