Underground/On the Surface, Salma El-Tarzi's feature documentary on the world of electro-Mahraganat, an emerging style of local music, will screen at the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo (NVIC) on 18 December. The award-winning film follows some of the scene's pioneers – Oka, Ortega and Wezza – catching them at a tipping point in their lives as they begin to transform as their fame explodes. El-Tarzi's handheld camera takes us behind the scenes of the underground music scene, unveiling the contrasts between the raging nightlife and the thoughtful mornings-after of the musicians. Her documentary Ele Beheb Rabena Erfaa Edoh Lefook (Those who Love God, Raise your Hands) premiered in 2013. She won the Muhr Arab Award for Best Director in the documentary section at Dubai International Film Festival. The director will be present for a discussion with the audience after the screening.
