Swimming: Ian Thorpe prepared to ‘fail' at London Games Former Olympic swimming champion Ian Thorpe says he is mentally prepared to “fail” at the 2012 London Games, given the short time frame since deciding to come out of retirement.
The Australian retired five years ago, having won five Olympic gold medals, 11 world titles and 13 individual world records. The 29-year-old Thorpe is training in Switzerland for his comeback. He returns to competition next month at a World Cup event in Singapore. He tells the BBC in Switzerland that he's “comfortable knowing” that there's the possibility he will fail. He says he doesn't think anyone's attempted a comeback in this time frame and “it's probably too short.”
