Egypt loses to Spain in bid to host 2017 Mediterranean Games Egypt's bid to host the 2017 Mediterranean Games fails, Spanish city Tarragona announced winner
Egypt has failed in its bid to host the 2017 Mediterranean Games after narrowly losing to Spain in Saturday's vote. Spanish city Tarragona won 36 votes to Alexandria's 34, denying the Egyptian coastal city the chance to host the event for the second time. The inaugural Mediterranean Games took place in Alexandria in 1951. In Saturday's race, all Arab countries voted for Egypt, with the exception of Syria who opted to support the Spanish bid. Egypt has been beset by security problems since January's revolution which toppled former autocratic leader Hosni Mubarak.
