Benni McCarthy returned home after spending 14 years in Europe, signing a two-year contract with Orlando Pirates, the South African club announced on Tuesday.
“It is without question that Benni (McCarthy) is one of the most successful and recognisable soccer players in South Africa over the past decade," Pirates Chairman Irvin Khoza told the club's official website.
"We are delighted that he has decided to join the club as we aim to be competitive in every competition this season. His international pedigree is second to none and he is a proven winner."
The 33-year-old striker is one of the most high-profile players in the history of South African football. He enjoyed a successful career in Europe that included a prestigious Champions League triumph with Portuguese side Porto in 2004.
The former Ajax, Celta Vigo, Porto, Blackburn and West Ham United man said he was delighted after receiving a warm reception at Orlando Pirates.
"The reception I have got from everyone at the club and the fans I have already met in the street has been great. Everyone was optimistic and gave me a really good feeling," said McCarthy.
"I'm thrilled and delighted and hope I can show my appreciation by coming in and playing good football and hope to score as many goals as possible to put the team where they belong.
“This is one of the biggest teams in Africa with many great players. I'm really looking forward to playing in the African Champions League with my new club.”
