Liverpool signs on for Zamalek centenary Liverpool agrees to face Zamalek in the Cairo giants' centenary ceremony next October after European giants Real Madrid, AC Milan and Inter Milan turned down the offer
Zamalek have received an agreement letter from English premier league side Liverpool to participate in the Whites' centenary celebrations. “Liverpool agrees to play us in the centenary calibrations game next October,” Zamalek board member Ahmed Sherin Fawzy was quoted as saying on the club's official site. “We asked festival's sponsor company to finalize the financial details with the English Premier League side,” he added. “The management are waiting for Hassan Shehata's approval before finalizing the deal with Liverpool,” Fawzy said. One of Egypt's oldest clubs, Zamalek, established in 5 January 1911, were set to hold their 100-year festivity some months ago, but the celebrations were postponed with the country in the grips of the 25 January revolution. The Cairo-based club initially approached Real Madrid, AC Milan and Inter Milan to host one of them in the their centenary ceremony but was deterred by the financial demands along with security concerns. Zamalek have won the Egyptian league title 11 times and the Egypt Cup on 21 occasions. Their success also extends beyond Egypt, having won five African Champions League trophies and many other championships.
