Muslim Brotherhood dismisses two of its members, interrogates others Muslim Brotherhood members are defying a decision forbidding them to join political parties outside Freedom and Justice
Muslim Brotherhood members have been dismissed for joining the Egyptian Current party, including Mohamed El-Kassas and Ahmed Abd El-Gawad, sources say. Others are still being questioned. The Muslim Brotherhood has declared that any member who joins a party other than Freedom and Justice will be expelled. Other parties have been forming and attracting members regardless of this decree. A new youth led party named the Egyptian Current, founded in part by Brotherhood youth leader Mohamed El-Kassas, has attracted some of the organisation's young members. Ibrahim El-Zaafarany, a senior member of the Brotherhood who resigned from the organisation months ago, has exerted a pull on some, including senior member Mohamed Habib who resigned from the group as a result. According to Brotherhood and Youth Coalition member Mohamed Osman, the group is also expelling or interrogating those who join Abd El-Moneim Aboul-Fotouh's campaign for the presidency. Aboul-Fotouh went against the Brotherhood's decision not to run a candidate in the presidency elections and was consequently expelled. Some Brotherhood members have nevertheless supported his campaign. Osman says that aside from those expelled, many more are being interrogated. “I submitted an application to join the Egyptian Current party and, although I am not yet an active member, I am facing interrogation tomorrow”, he said.
