Lacklustre Zamalek held by lowly Aswan A below-par Zamalek side failed to break down a dogged Aswan defence, losing the first points of their league campaign
Egyptian Premier League holders Zamalek failed to overcome a resilient Aswan to play out a scoreless away draw Sunday. A dreary match saw neither side create many clear-cut chances, with Zamalek attackers looking completely out of sorts. Last season's double champions Zamalek lost their first points of the campaign following the draw with the newly-promoted outfit, after beating Wadi Degla 2-0 in the league opener. Zamalek failed to break down Aswan's dogged defence. After 10 minutes from kick off, Zamalek came close through Mahmoud 'Kahraba' who missed the target following a fine combination between right-back Omar Gaber and lone centre forward Bassem Morsi. Bassem, who has been struggling to hit his peak for a while, then missed the target after darting towards the near post to meet a cross from wide forward Mohamed Ibrahim on 22 minutes. Tactically, Zamalek looked more coherent as they left less space between the lines, but it was their attackers who let them down with a myriad of misplaced passes. On the other side, the league newcomers sat back and largely managed to thwart their opponents, who didn't quite look at their best. Out of the blue, Aswan surprised everyone with a thunderous low shot from Osama Marei, who forced a superb save from Zamalek keeper Ahmed El-Shennawi on 37 minutes. Similarly, midfielder Maarouf Yusuf saw another long-range strike parried by the keeper 10 minutes after the interval, before El-Shennawi blocked a strike from Marei. The final minutes then saw Jesualdo Ferreira's men mount pressure in search of the winning goal, with Gaber seeing a close-range strike blocked by the hosts' keeper. Shortly afterwards, striker Morsi had an overhead kick that went narrowly wide of the post, as Zamalek failed to make it two wins out of two in the new league season.
