Equatorial Guinea forward Javier Balboa admitted that "maybe" there was no foul in the controversial penalty kick that allowed his team to come back against Tunisia in the Nations Cup quarter finals. "Maybe it wasn't a penalty but these are things that happen every weekend in the best leagues of world: In Spain, in England," he was quoted as saying by French magazine France football. Mauritanian referee Rajindraparsad Seechurn pointed to the spot in injury time after Balboa fell under an apparent challenge from his marker, sparking furious protests from the Tunisians. Balboa converted the penalty then fired home a sublime free kick in extra time to become a national hero after propelling his country to the Nations Cup semi-final for the first ever time. "Maradona scored with his hand during a World Cup and that was much more obvious than the penalty. Penalties, we have to score them too, and there was a lot of pressure because of its timing. Then there was the free kick and we won," the 29-year midfielder added. The Tunisians fumed about the controversial decision, launching a scathing attack against Seechum and CAF president Issa Hayatou. Tunisian Football Federation president Wadie Jary resigned from the CAF on Sunday, a day after the game, in protest of his team's exit.
