CAF disciplinary board to meet over Tunisia's fan violence
Published in Ahram Online on 08 - 05 - 2011

African football's governing body will hold an urgent meeting to review match reports and decide on what action to take following the crowd violence during Club Africain's match against Al Hilal
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that its disciplinary board will meet to discuss the violent pitch invasion by fans of Tunisia's Club Africain in the second-leg of their African Champions League last 16 tie against Sudanese side Al Hilal.
CAF said on Sunday their board will meet prior to the CAF Interclubs Official Draw scheduled for 15 May to examine the riots in Tunisia. Home fans rushed the field in the closing stages of Saturday's match to attack the referee and visiting players. No exact date for the meeting was given.
“What happened is not acceptable at all and the punishment will be strict and quick,” president of CAF technical committee, Mohamed Abdel-Monem “Shatta”, was quoted as saying in Sudanese newspaper Al-Sada.
Seven minutes before the end of the Continental clash, with the aggregate score at 2-1 in the Sudanese side's favour, Tunisian fans, sensing there was no time left for their team to win the match, took over the pitch and forced the referee to leave.
Some were seen holding bladed weapons, which they used to assault security personnel. This is the latest episode in violence by football fans in the region. In the previous round of the competition, Club Africain's match at Cairo giants Zamalek was cancelled after thousands of Egyptian fans stormed the pitch and attacked the Tunisian side.
Zamalek were handed an $80,000 fine and ordered to play two African matches behind closed doors for the chaos at Cairo Stadium.
