Egypt court upholds death sentences for 183 Brotherhood supporters, including Supreme Guide
Published in Ahram Online on 21 - 06 - 2014

Minya Criminal Court upheld death sentences Saturday passed on 183 Muslim Brotherhood supporters, including Brotherhood Supreme Guide Mohamed Badie.
Of 683 defendants in the case, 183 were sentenced to death, four were sentenced to life imprisonment, and 496 defendants were acquitted.
The defendants were found guilty of attacking Adawa Police Station and killing a police officer, Mamdouh Kotb Mohamed Kotb, on 14 August 2013, following the dispersal ofpro-Morsi sit-ins in Rabaa Al-Adawiya and Nahda squares in the capital.
They were also found guilty of committing violence, rioting, destroying public and private property, attacking police officers, and inciting violence.
In April, the 683 defendants in the case were all sentenced to death. However, the verdict was referred to Egypt's Grand Mufti for ratification before Saturday's verdict.
The verdict can still be appealed in front of the Court of Cassation.
Out of the 683 defendants, 110 are detained while the rest are at large.
This is not the only case where the Brotherhood's supreme guide has received a death sentence.
Last Thursday, Badie, along with Brotherhood top leaders, was given a death sentence for charges of inciting murder in relation to clashes that took place outside Al-Isteqama Mosque in Giza in August, after Morsi's ouster.
