Sunday 8 June Opening of Museumish exhibition at Nile Sunset Annex, 6pm Artist-run space Nile Sunset Annex hosts a group exhibition of paintings and sculptures. Two metal sculptures by Sobhy Guirguis (1929-2013) balance on two different, vivacious pedestal sculptures by Mariam Elias and Paradoxia, made with goldleaf, wood veneer and coloured perspex. A third pedestal sculpture stands by itself. On the wall is a copy by Nile Sunset Annex of a painting by Wadiaa Shenouda (1923-1969) that is on display in the just re-opened Alexandria Museum of Fine Art. Flat 17, 4th Floor, 1071 Corniche El-Nil, Garden City, Cairo Screening of Living Skin at Netherlands-Flemish Institute, 7pm Directed by Fawzi Salah, Living Skin (2010) talks about Shoushou and Mohammad, two children who live and work in Cairo's tanneries. In order to make this eye-opening documentary, the director spend a few years living in the tanneries. The result is a poignant picture of the difficult life the children endure. The film's running time is 60 minutes, screened in Arabic with English subtitles. Watch the trailer below. 1, Mahmoud Azmi Street, Zamalek, Cairo Harpist Manal Mohie El-Din at Bibliotheca Alexandrina, 8pm Bibliotheca Alexandrina Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Mohamed Saad Basha, will perform Mozart's Sinfonia for Strings in C Major and Handel's Concerto Grosso in G Major Op. 6. The soloist of the evening will be harpist Manal Mohie El-Din. Bibliotheca Alexandrina Arts Centre, El-Geish Road, Shatby, Alexandria Last days of Children's World photo exhibition at El Sawy Culturewheel Children's World is an initiative of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Cairo, in cooperation with El Sawy Culturewheel and supported by the Polish-Egyptian Businessmen Association. The exhibition shows photographs submitted to a competition covering two themes: Poland in My Memories and Child and its World. Children's World opened on 1 June and will continue until 9 June. Word Hall, El Sawy Culturewheel, 26 July St, Zamalek, Cairo Monday 9 June Lost and Found play performed at Matareya Sporting Club, 7pm Lost and Found is a performance that incorporates circus and musical elements staged by Al-Darb Al-Ahmar Arts School. The play presents the stories and aspirations of its children and youth who are students at Al-Darb Al-Ahmar. The script of the play is a result of a storytelling workshop hosted a year ago, during which the children shared their day-to-day struggles, expressed their emotional connection to the political situation and other burning questions. Lost and Found premiered in February at the American University in Cairo's Falaki stage, followed by three performances at El-Genaina Theatre in early April. El-Gabal Street, Matareya 161, Cairo Screening of The Ugly One at CIC, 8pm The 2013 movie is an experimental work directed by Eric Baudelaire. The screening is part of A Guest Without a Host Is a Ghost, a visual arts project that takes the absence of public or private contemporary artwork collections in Egypt as its starting point. Contemporary Image Collective (CIC), 22 Abdel-Khaleq Tharwat St, 4th Floor, Downtown Cairo Screening of Areej - Scent of Revolution in Wekalet Behna, 6pm The newly opened Alexandrian space hosts a screening for one of the most critically acclaimed films made about the revolution Areej Scent of Revolution by Viola Shafik. The documentary film features four characters who take viewers through their stories in the revolution. 1 El-Kenissa El-Marounia Street, El-Mansheya, Alexandria Tuesday 10 June One-day art exhibit at Four Seasons Hotel, 12pm This one-day exhibition, organised by the online trading platform and gallery Arts-Mart, is set to feature works by some of Egypt's most prominent contemporary artists, including Omar El-Nagdi, Mohamed Abla and Samir Fouad, well as a number of promising emerging artists, including Lina Mowafy, Tasneem ElMeshad, Aya El-Fallah and Miriam Hathout, among others. Four Seasons Hotel (Cairo at Nile Plaza), 1089 Corniche Al-Nil, Garden City, Cairo Last day of Ala Younis' exhibition at Gypsum Gallery Amman-based visual artist Ala Younis comes to Cairo with this new solo show at Gypsum Gallery, UAR. The show features Younis' research-based project rooted in a photograph of former Egyptian president Gamal Abdel-Nasser looking over a crowd at the signing of the sovereign union agreement between Egypt and Syria in 1958. Watch one of the circus performances staged by Al-Darb Al-Ahmar Arts School below: Wednesday 11 June Performance Incomplete Alliteration at Rawabet Theatre, 8pm Incomplete Alliteration staged by the Hand Made theatre troupe is the result of an improvisation workshop. Directed by Mohamed Abo Eliazed and Mahmoud El-Haddad, the production is supported by the British Council and the Italian Institute. The performance will be repeated at the British Council on 12 June and at the Jesuit College on 14 June. El-Nabrawy street, off Champollion street, Downtown Cairo The Surface of Spectral Scattering at the Townhouse Factory Space A large-scale, multi-channel sound and light installation now occupies the Townhouse Factory Space, engineered by contemporary multidisciplinary artist Magdi Mostafa. This site-specific installation, which stretches out over 600 square metres, pulls visitors into a pool-sized pit of darkness interrupted only by the 10,000 hand-embroidered LED lights sprinkled carefully over an elevated stage-like structure at the centre of the space to resemble a map. Read a review here. 10 Al-Nabarawy St, off Champollion St, Downtown Cairo Short films curated by Cimatheque at Zawya, 9.30pm Cairo's only arthouse cinema, Zawya, hosts a programme curated by Cairo's most anticipated alternative cinema and film centre, Cimatheque, for a week. The programme is dubbed Kurrasat At Cimatheque and is the public face of a six-month-long mentorship and training workshop for film critics. Three short films are showing tonight: A Walk In the Grey Sun (Mona Lotfy, Egypt, 2012, 11min), Peau de Colle (Kaouther Ben Hania, Tunisia/France, 2013, 23min) and Baghdad Messi (Sahim Khalifa, Iraq/Belgium, 2012, 19min). Odeon Cinema, 4 Abdel Hamid Said Street, off Talaat Harb Street, Downtown Cairo Last days of Nirvana exhibit at Mashrabia Gallery Contemporary artist Mohamed El-Ganouby had been absent from Cairo's art scene for the past five years, during which he was living in the United States, but here he returns with an exhibition that promises to present an "immersive and hypnotic" experience, according to the curatorial statement. "Like having come out of long meditation, or an ecstatic state, reality is shredded into pieces and reassembled following rhythmical references," reads the statement. 8 Champollion Street, Downtown Cairo Thursday 12 June Wake Up performance at Nahda Association for Arts and Science, 7.30pm Monodrama titled Wake Up, based on an Italian play which was translated into Arabic by Menha Batrawi. The play has a duration of 45 minutes and will be performed by Doaa Hamza. The play will be staged also on Friday 13 June. 15 El-Mahrani Street, El-Fagala, Ramses, Cairo Screening of Starring Sigmund Freud at Townhouse Library, 8pm The 2012 movie Starring Sigmund Freud is directed by John Mennick. Screening will be preceded by a conversation between Ania Szremski and a surprise guest. The screening is part of A Guest Without a Host Is a Ghost, a visual arts project that takes the absence of public or private contemporary artwork collections in Egypt as its starting point. Friday 13 June A Handel's Afternoon in the lobby of the Cairo Opera House, 3pm This concert, dedicated to Handel, will take place in the lobby of the Cairo Opera House. Dubbed A Handel's Afternoon, the performance will include a few of the composer's staples works perfumed by the Cairo Celebration Choir, conducted by Nayer Nagui. The concert will also feature soprano Dina Iskander and tenor Joseph Kauzman. Among the highlight of the performance will be Zadok the Priest, a coronation anthem, and Hallelujah, the famed chorus from Handel's English-language oratorio Messiah. Sunday 15 June Rim Banna at Kasr El Nil Theatre, 9pm Rim Banna, the Palestinian singer and song writer from Nazareth, returns to Egypt; this time to perform at Kasr El Nil theatre's stage. Banna's songs are inspired by the Palestinian people's conscience and sentiments, their culture, history and folklore. The concert will be repeated at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria on Tuesday 17 June.
