Sunday 13 April Rajastan Josh at Hanager Arts Centre at 7pm Nathoo Solanki, Chugge Khan, and other Rajasthani musicians will perform traditional music from the north western region of India. Cairo Opera House grounds, Zamalek, Cairo Opening of 'Toys' by Hany Rashed at Mashrabia Gallery at 7pm Hany Rashed presents his latest collection of artwork in what will be his ninth solo exhibit at the Mashrabia Gallery downtown. In Toys, the artist tackles the assumption that human beings in contemporary society exist with a freedom that is limited by constraints, thus resembling toys. Rashed presents a world of plastic objects in this exhibition, paradoxically responding to contemporary reality through creating inanimate toys. The exhibition runs until 15 May 8 Champollion Street, Downtown, Cairo Japanese violinist at Falaki Theatre at 8pm Opening on 13 April the annual Cairo Contemporary Music Days 2014, Japanese violinist Takao Hyakutome will present the Egyptian première of Vykintas Baltakas' Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music). Organised by the European-Egyptian Contemporary Music Society (EECMS), the event will run until 17 April. The movie is a story of a paralyzed magician-turned-radio jockey who files a petition in court seeking permission to end his life. The film will have Arabic subtitles. Screening is part of Indian Film Panorama, which will takes place between 11 and 16 April, part of the second edition of India by the Nile. Welad El-Batta El-Soda at Hanager Theatre at 7:30pm El-Mesaharaty Lab, in cooperation with Doum Cultural Foundation, will be performing 'Welad El-Batta El-Soda' (Children of the Black Duck) at Cairo's Hanager Theatre starting 14 April. In Welad El-Batta El-Soda, the performers explore the concept of discrimination: Is it inherent in society, an integral part of it? Or has it been nurtured throughout the years? Is it the norm? Or is it still practiced only by a random few? Most importantly: will it ever stop? The show combines acting, singing and storytelling, and flows animatedly for one-and-a-half hours. Read morehere. Though 'Don Quixote' is within the Cairo Opera Ballet Company's repertoire, it is not performed frequently. The troupe first performed this ballet in 1992, and then in 2005. Thus the ballet returns once again to the Cairo Opera House stage after a nine-year absence. Cairo Conservatory, off Haram street, Cairo Opening of exhibition 'Between existence and nonexistence' at Mahmoud Mokhtar museum at 7pm “There is no sovereign identity. The way in which the perception of oneself is elaborated in contact with the outside world based on direct circumstances and other more indirect related to the history and evolution of the society,” writes Amira Paree, an Egyptian-Dutch artist, in notes accompanying her solo exhibition titled 'Between existence and nonexistence'. In her works, Paree analyses her own process of living, communication, and creation and uses this analysis as a new moment of creation. The exhibition will run until 5 May. The Piazza, Sahl Hasheesh, 20km south of Hurghada Harp recital at the Cairo Opera House at 8pm Joined by her Oriental ensemble, Manal Mohie Eldin will perform a selection of Arabic music arranged for harp. Mohie Eldin is a professor at the Cairo Conservatory. She continues to perform in Omar Khairat's ensemble and with her own Oriental ensemble. Over the past decade, she gained popular fame thanks to her many performances with the Banat Al-Nil (Daughters of the Nile) Ensemble, which she co-founded in the early 2000s. With her Manal Mohie Eldin Oriental Ensemble, she released a CD including an Arabic repertoire for harp. In 2013 Mohie Eldin received a prestigious State Incentive Award for Arts. The only rule is visitors can't go empty handed. They have to take something with them on the visit. According to the programme notes, the composition reflects the panic, fear, escape, chaos and agony which broke out when hundreds of thugs brutally attacked peaceful football fans, killing 74 of them and injuring hundreds. Among the renowned names who will participate in the discussions will be Indian cartoonist Sudhir Tailang, as well asUrvashi Butalia,Indian feminist, publisher and historian. To wide audiences Butalia is recognised as a co-founder of India's first feminist publishing house, Kali for Women and author of works tackling India's history, culture and politics. Council Hall, Supreme Council for Culture, Cairo Opera House's grounds Opening of an exhibition of political cartoons by Sudhir Tailang at the Modern Arts Museum As part of the visual arts section of India by the Nile 2014, renowned Indian cartoonist Sudhir Tailang will present his works between 17 and 19 April. Sudhir Tailang is one of India's most renowned political cartoonists with daily cartoons published for over four decades in leading newspapers, including the Hindustan Times. While Tailang's cartoons persist to comment on the daily political events of India, he also reacts to major international news. Among Tailang's works are a few commentaries on the Egyptian revolution. Tailang's cartoons become a vivid testimony to the social and political changes of India, touch on international phenomena; as they poignantly criticise, they invariably leave a large margin for thoughtful reflection. Read morehere Sunday 20 April Hassan Khan Exhibition at Kodak Passageway This year, D-CAF decided to dedicate its visual arts programme to contemporary Egyptian artist Hassan Khan. The show is the first major survey of Khan's work in Cairo. The exhibit features works produced by the internationally acclaimed artist between the mid-90s and present day. The works include text-based projects, sculptural forms, music projects, among others. The exhibition will be located in unused storefronts alongside the Kodak passageway in Downtown Cairo. The site has been designed and curated by CLUSTER in such a way that creates a series of exhibition spaces that blur the lines between the artist's diverse oeuvre and the surrounding local community.
