The Administrative Court in Alexandria overturned a decision by Egypt's Minister of Information preventing a broadcaster from wearing the Islamic Headscarf. Maha al-Shafei, a broadcaster on Egyptian Television's channel five, appealed the decision in 2008 as a violation of Egyptian law. The court said that wearing the veil protects the dignity of Muslim women and reflects their commitment to their religion's teachings. It added that wearing the veil does not violate the rules of her job. The court said that banning the veil in specific places is an attempt aiming to impede religious and personal freedoms, so it decided to cancel the decision and to compensate Shafei.
