CAIRO: Egyptian-American journalist Mona el-Tahawy was arrested in Cairo early on Thursday morning as violence clashes between demonstrators and police entered their third day. “Beaten arrested in interior ministry,” el-Tahawy posted on her Twitter account at 3:44am on Thursday. She has not posted since, and no other information is confirmed. An online campaign ‘#freemona' briefly trended on Twitter, and U.S. officials are involved in talking with Egyptian officials over el-Tahawy's arrest. At 6:24am Cairo time, the U.S. Department of State posted on its official Twitter account, “Reports of @MonaEltahawy (Mona el-Tahawy) and @pangeaworld (Jehane Noujiam) detention very concerning. @USEMbassyCairo engaging authorities.” El-Tahawy is a freelance journalist based in New York. She has written for the Washington Post, the New York Times, the International Herald Tribune, and other major papers. Noujiam is an Egyptian-American filmmaker who was arrested yesterday in Cairo. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces have left at least 35 dead and thousands injured since Saturday morning.
