CAIRO: Egyptian presidential hopeful and al-Karama Party head Hamdeen Sabbahi today presented suggestions to improve the situation in Cairo's iconic Tahrir Square and to meet protesters' demands. Sabbahi said the most important thing is to clear Mohamed Mahmoud Street and close it in order to stop the bloodshed. Presenting a public apology for the injured and the families of the martyrs is necessary to calm the situation in Tahrir, he added. Sabbahi also suggested forming a fact-finding committee headed by a respected judge to investigate the Tahrir incidents, and also to form a national rescue council to coordinate with Egypt's ruling military council. During an interview with evening talk show 90 Minutes, Sabbahi added that he did not go to Tahrir Square because he believes that Tahrir reflects the sound of the people and it must be clear of presidential candidates and political forces that may use it to achieve their benefits. “Protestors in Tahrir Square do not represent any political forces. They represent the Egyptian people, who got bored after a long period of delaying and breaking promises,” said Sabbahi. Sabbahi also said the security's reaction against the protestors was a big mistake. He said that the one who ordered the use of force against protestors must be punished. “Without the Tahrir protestors, [Prime Minister] Essam Sharaf's government would not have resigned and delivering authority to civilians would not be determined,” said Sabbahi. “Tahrir youth did what all the presidential candidates and political leaders have been trying to do for months,” he added.
