Damages to Tahrir Square during the recent clashes and protests will cost at least 20 million EGP (U.S. $3.34 million), according to Maj. Gen. Saif al-Islam Abdul Bari, the deputy governor of West Cairo. There is significant damage to sidewalks, trees, parks, traffic signals and light poles, and most of the damage is localized to Mohamed Mahmoud Street – where the clashes have been the fiercest – and Qasr al-Aini Street, Bari reported. He mentioned that he dispatched five trucks to carry the garbage accumulated in the Square. “The State cannot sustain more damage particularly since the areas have been damaged more than 10 times in the past,” he added. “I am not against peaceful demonstrations,” he stressed. “I am against vandalism that costs the State.”
