DAMIETTA, Egypt: Egypt's ruling Military Council ordered the shutdown of controversial Damietta fertilizer plant in response to protesters' demands, said Damietta governor Mohammad Ali Fleifil. The plant has stoked tensions between Damietta's residents for six days ending today in clashes between the military forces and protesters, leaving one killed and five injured. The residents proceeded to rejoice at the military council's decision. Some of the plant's employees remain stranded inside due to the plant being surrounded by protesters who blocked the roads leading to the factory. The demonstrators are protesting against fertilizer plant MOPCO's alleged polluting of the sea and destroying the fishing industry in the area.
