CAIRO: Parliamentary candidate Gameela Ismail suspended her electoral campaign today in protest over the Egyptian military prosecution's decision to detain a longtime activist. Alaa Abdel Fattah was remanded into custody for 15 days for investigation today. He is accused of inciting the deadly October 9 Maspiro clashes that left 27 dead. Ismail, a prominent public figure and television host, posted the news on the official Twitter account for her satellite talk show, E3adet Nazar. Abdel Fattah's arrest “will provoke the youth against military trials” of civilians, Ismail added, also on Twitter. Ismail intends to run as an independent for the People's Assembly, the lower house of Egypt's bicameral parliament, in the Cairo district.
