KAFR EL-SHEIKH, Egypt: Thousands of Salafis and prominent Salafi scholar Abou Ishaq al-Heweny admirers gathered outside his court trial to support him in Kafr el-Sheikh on October 22. Salafi supporters chanted slogans supporting al-Heweny and against the Grand Mufti of Egypt, Ali Gomaa. The streets leading to the trial was closed. The Salafis built a large stage close to the court and held up signs and banners to express their protests from governorates of Salloum to Giza. In the same context, groups of lawyers closed the door of the court trial, preventing the prosecutors and the trial employees from entering the trial. The lawyers' action was as a protest against the judicial authority law and there were many clashes between those who wanted to enter the court trial and the lawyers. The Salafis did not to take any sides and remained neutral. It should be noted al-Heweny is tried since the Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa filed a suitcase against him, accusing him of distorting his reputation through Islamic satellite channels.
