CAIRO: The main challenge facing Egypt today is insecurity, said likely Egyptian presidential candidate Abd-Allah al-Ashaal, adding that the government is to blame for not taking serious steps to achieve social justice and combat corruption. Al-Ashaal stressed the need for a judicial role to exclude the members of the dissolved National Democratic Party from participating in Egyptian political life. He blamed such members for corrupting life in Egypt. The lack of awareness and insecurity in Egypt are major threats to the electoral process, he said. “The authorities should do their best to restore the security and stability by restructuring the police institutions so that they can best serve the interests of the people.” He also stressed the need to protect Egypt from potential sectarian tension. Public awareness should be raised so that the people can deal with conspiracies and can clean up the public institutions, particularly by removing those who added to corruption, he added.
