The Board of the Egyptian al-Omah Newspaper today decided to dismiss journalist Khaled al-Atfy. Al-Atfy earlier demonstrated against the elections of the Press Syndicate in front of the Administrative Court, which were held on October 14. The newspaper condemns the actions of al-Atfy and his decision to impede the legal demands of the journalists for a strong Syndicate Council, said Ahmed Atwan, editor-in-chief of the newspaper. The newspaper insists on his dismissal and demands that officials activate the decision, a newspaper statement read. It also accused the former Syndicate Council of refusing to execute a previous decision, which has been pending since May 2007. This statement came amidst demands from other journalists to dismiss al-Atfy from the Syndicate, claiming that he worked against the interests of the press.
