The Egyptian Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources, Hisham Qandil, said Egypt presented a U.S. $240 million nonrefundable grant to South Sudan. Qandil also said relations between Egypt and South Sudan is not new, but an old historical relationship. The grant includes U.S. $26.6 million to carry out irrigation and water resources projects and provide water in dry areas. Qandil said South Sudan has many water resources and most of its agricultures depend on rains. “Egypt is studying the establishment of two dams to generate electricity in South Sudan. Egypt also aims to meet South Sudan's need and join it in electricity linkage project of the Nile Basin countries,” said Qandil.
