The Egyptian government discussed the state's housing program for the years 2012-2017 Monday. The plan aims to accommodate 10 million citizens. Minister of Housing Fathi el-Baradei detailed the program during a cabinet meeting. The program aims to provide a million housing units. Each unit ranges from 50 to 70 square meters (540 to 753 square feet), with two or three rooms. Housing will be built on 250,000 pieces of land with an area of 200 to 300 square meters (2,150 to 3229 square feet). Baradei said that 50,000 pieces of land would be put up for an auction for upper-middle income Egyptians. The official spokesman of the cabinet, Mohamed Higazy, said that this project will contribute to evacuating slums and will create more than 10 million job opportunities. He also said that it aligns with the state's philosophy after the January 25 Revolution to realize social justice. The meeting included the deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and the Minister of Finance Hazem al-Beblawy, Minister of International Cooperation Fayza Aboul Naga, and was headed by Prime Minister Essam Sharaf.
